Puffing Billy Race Report - Luke Whitmore

Yesterday I was lucky enough to come away with a second place at
the annual Puffing Billy Great Train Race. This is one of
Victoria's premier fun runs, a unique race where athletes race a
steam train from Belgrave to Emerald. I was extremely pleased with
not only the result but a PB of 2.10 over this course. The pace was
hot at that start and as usual there were a few bolters. I settled
into a solid pace at the start but felt controlled. I was
determined to pace this race correctly. With three big climbs you
can blow yourself to bits in a matter of seconds on this
challenging course. In saying that I did take a few risks,
attacking and pushing for the lead on the first big climb.
I lead the race for the middle six kilometres but eventual
winner Mitchell Brown was too strong on the final climb. At the
10km mark he had a 15-20sec gap, which he was able to maintain on
the fast slightly downhill section over the final 3km.
Thankyou once again to my terrific Sponsors, Team Degani Cycling
Café, Saucony, Winners Sports Nutrition, Ryders Eyewear and
Consultive Recruitment. I am happy with my early season form and
look forward to continuing on a good start to the winter.
